“Without
Eating The
Strawberries”

While attending the 2024 Yale Norfolk School of Art Summer Residency, I was commissed to install a collaborative work on the The Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate. The resulting work was a collaboration between myself and artist Glen Hong, in which we wrapped a mutually beloved tree in handmade rope made out of bedsheets in the Korean Bojagi style, a tradition of cloth wrapping. The rope was wrapped into the shape of a harness connected by a handcarved wooden ring on which a smaller ring of barbed wire was suspended. The barbed wire framed a small strawberry bush that has begun to grow from between the tree’s trunks. This work was an effort to, without sexually allegorizing the landscape, render the tree as an equally bodied presence to the human viewer.
